Der Begriff der Cultures of travel richtet sich gegen eine sesshafte Perspektive auf Mobilität und damit gegen die Reduzierung auf push- und pull-Faktoren. Mobilität, so die Autoren, ist in cultures of travel Teil des alltäglichen Handelns, der eigenen Identität und Selbstrepräsentation: "Population movements have always been and are still important vehicles for self-promotion, suvival and, in case of the Fulbe, part of their self-definition." (S. 84)
Daily talk is about being mobile, and relations with others are all placed in the perspectives of mobility. In fact we have a mobile culture, a travelling culture. Their hotel lounges and airports, to paraphrase Clifford, are local and regional markets or watering points for the livestock. (S. 72)
