"Working with Museum Collections" - Dr. Christine Kainert (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Universität Münster)

Abstract

Most archaeologists are used to work in the field with freshly excavated objects and contexts. This often involves challenging conditions like time pressure, heat and dirt, and a great deal of improvisational talent is required. In contrast, working with museum collections presents its own challenges, such as missing contexts, old or lost documentation, restricted access or strict rules for handling objects. Using the example of working with pottery, my presentation aims to stimulate a discussion amongst the participants regarding their experiences of handling and documenting archaeological materials when working in a museum vs. an ongoing excavation. In addition, I will discuss issues related to the ethical aspects of collecting, storing, and exporting objects.
